Tropical Depression Four Taking Aim at FL Panhandle

Tropical Depression Four has developed overnight off the Florida Gulf Coast. The depression was showing signs of organization going into the evening as seen on the Tampa radar below from last night.  I tagged the image with a hurricane icon to show where I believed the center was located.  As it turns, out I wasn’t too far off.

Tropical Depression Four from Tampa, FL Radar

The depression is moving on the western edge of the same high pressure ridge that is pushing Tropical Storm Ana westward into the Caribbean and is forecast to make a landfall as a 50mph-wind tropical storm.  Should it gain TS status, it will be named Claudette.  The likelihood of TD 4 developing into a hurricane are very slim – the system’s time is very limited.

The depression is forecast to make landfall near the Destin, Florida area overnight tonight.  Expect areas to the east of the storm system to feel the heaviest effects of wind and, more importantly, heavy rains, beginning shortly after midnight tonight.
