Very Intense Tropical Cyclone Edzani has continued strengthening despite recent forecasts that weakening would commence by this time.
Edzani’s current details:
- winds of 120kts (138mph or 222kph) – category four;
- Dvorak estimates have increased (of course) to 6.5. Eight is the highest possible Dvorak number;
- barometric pressure has also dropped from yesterday’s 923mb (27.26in) to 905mb (26.72in);
Edzani is approximately 870 miles wide according to RSMC La Reunion. Tropical storm-force winds extend as much as 211 miles primarily in the eastern quadrant.
RSMC believes Edzani has reached peak intensity and that is verified by an 08/1959Z Aqua pass (85H) where the southern quadrant of the cyclone has become void of deep convection.
Edzani’s forecast continues to shift just slightly but far enough away from any land areas to cause concern. Edzani is now traveling southwest beneath a high pressure ridge. The cyclone should turn more towards the south as the steering flow of an approaching trough takes over.
Edzani is expected to slowly weaken 48 hours; faster thereafter due to cooler oceanic temperatures.
