Hurricane Gustav just offshore Louisiana

in Atlantic Basin

A station just off the Mississippi Delta, Pilot’s Station, has been consistently reporting 3am Central time this morning.  Currently winds at that location are 90mph with gusts to 117mph.  Pressure is dropping rapidly as Gustav’s eye passes just to the west.

Remarkably, the next closest offshore station, South Timbalier Block 52, just south of Timbalier Bay and 40 miles or so northwest of the eye is reporting winds 55mph with gusts to 65mph.

Several tornado warnings have also been issued across Pensacola.  Another has just been issued in the area of Picayune and Diamondhead, Mississippi, just west of Gulfport.  This is a confirmed tornado by a storm spotter; the tornado came onshore near Hwy 49.

Carabelle, Florida is reporting an approximate four-foot storm surge with flooding in several areas.

No reports of river flooding throughout the area as of yet
